Artist’s statement

My aim is to explore the potential that the incorporation of digital and artificial intelligence brings to an artistic process, and question how it can provide a new approach to art production.

I am fascinated by the many opportunities that computer programming can offer the creative process. In particular, I enjoy developing programs that use artificial intelligence algorithms to aid art practice or produce interactive art experiences for the audience. However, despite my passion for the digital world, I often think of its limitations, especially when I see the beauty of a painting painted with traditional techniques. The light that bounces off the canvas, the brushstroke, and the paint’s thickness still seem much more beautiful than the light on the screen. Yet I keep looking for a connecting point between the digital and the physical world in art simply because I can’t decide which one I like best.

My practice and research are influenced by the work of several artists working in the computational art field, such as Frieder Nake, William Latham, and Patrick Tresset, and I am intrigued by post-digital painters, for whom digital is culturally fused with their analogue processes, such as James Faure Walker, Michael Manning and Michael Staniak. I am also inspired and influenced by the work of artist/writer James Bridle and philosopher Luciano Floridi who investigate how the digital is introducing a new visual aesthetic and is changing the way we perceive the world.

Guido Salimbeni is an Italian artist based in the UK.  Currently doing a PhD at the University of Nottingham.

He was born in Turin, Italy. He started painting as a teenager, studying under the instruction of artist Ettore Fico ( From his mentor, Guido learned the art of being a good craftsman to become a good painter. Guido recalls that the lessons with his master were focused on the correct use of the materials and the organization of the work. He continued his pupillage with Ettore for more than ten years. Following a period of working as the finance director for a gourmet food company in Alba, Italy, Guido retrained as a 3D modeler and animator, then a Data Scientist and Aritificial Intelligence Researcher. He has developed his painting style and methods over many years through experimentation and detailed observation and study of artist’s techniques and the galleries throughout Italy and Europe. Recently he has begun to experiment with the incorporation of 3D printed elements in printmaking, and new advanced digital technology including Virtual Reality Applications and Artificial Intelligence for the creative process.

He attended several fine art workshops and courses, including “Painting in Plein Air” with Marc Dalessio, “Painting the Human Figure like the Old Masters” at the Angel School in Florence and “Painting Portrait in Oil” with Adam Markovic in his Florentine studio. He completed his Masters in Fine Art at Middlesex University in London and he is currently attending a PhD at the University of Nottingham.

The subject, the composition and the brush strokes are organized in a way to create tension in the painting. There is an image of suspension or potential motion of the subject held in place by visual forces that work in opposite directions. These visual forces changes depending on the paintings. Sometimes there is the perception of weight that pushes down against a rigid and centered composition that keeps in place. Sometimes there is a simple perspective interrupted by some unexpected and illogical overlapping elements. There are some 3d printed elements on top of the canvas, that enhance the visual tension.
